Biographie
Charles Collignon joined the firm of his uncle Albert Houlliot (Houlliot & Cie from 1923), manufacturers of surveying compasses and other topographical instruments. A sun-dial in the form of a watch is known.1 During the 2nd World War, since a good part of the company's production had a military application, the workshops were closed by the German occupiers of Paris. Collignon himself was mobilised. In 1940 Albert Houlliot died, and his widow the following year, but Collignon, who inherited the business, could not accede to his inheritance until 27 May 1946 when the company was renamed 'Collignon-Houlliot'. His son Michel, who joined the firm in 1959 was director from the 1960s onwards. The production of compasses declined to virtfuhally nothing during the 1970s in face of powerful Asian competition. Both Houlliot & Cie and Collignon-Houlliot furnished either complete compasses, or their constituent parts, to other makers and retailers. Among the main French customers were Manufrance, La Société des Lunétiers, Vion, Secretan, Topochaix, Huet, Les Accéssoires Topographique and Morin. thanks to the friendly relations of the directors of Houlliot and Vion, there wass aworking agreement that Vion occupied itself with marine instruments, Houlliot making only boat compassesin this speciality.
