Biographie
Born into a family of architects, Charles Beaudouin learnt mechanics and electricity at the Ecole des Chauffeurs Mécaniciens, Paris, whence he graduated in 1896. After his thirty-two months of military service (1896-99) he was employed by the Maison Breguet before, encouraged by his teachers, in particular Charles Féry, to exploit the practical skill in making instruments that he had shiown in the school, he set up a workshop of 'Mécanique de précision - électricité' in 1903. He was assisted by Henri Gondet from 1910 to 1945, and from 1933 onwards by Paul Beaudouin, both trained at the ESPCI. During its sixty years of independent existence the firm manufactured numerous specialised instruments for physics and industrial laboratories. Among the scientists with whom it collaborated were Charles Féry for optics and calorimetry, Henri Abraham, Dufour and Dubois for oscillating-recorders, André Debierne in radioactivity, Contremoulins, Guinier and Rose for x-rays, Captain Ferrié and Paul Boucherot about radio-electricity, Fernand Holweck in vaccuum technology, Gosset, Heitz-Boyer and Gomez in medical surgical technology especially cardiac recording machines, Pierre de Fontbrune for micro-manipulation, André Langevin on the applications of piezo-electricity, flight recorders with François Hussenot. In addition they were licenced to make various pieces of equipment in magnetism by laboratories of the Centre National de la Recherche scientifique1. During the period of the 1st World War the firm numbered some 80 employees. This number had risen to 120 by 1970 when, after the death of Paul Beaudouin, the firm was sold to Alcatel.
