Biographie
The lack of identifying initials means that members of the Baradelle family can frequently not be distinguished from each other. Attributions of instruments can therefore often only be made on stylistic grounds. The signature 'Baradelle ainé', however, identifies Nicolas Eloy Baradelle, while that of' Baradelle le jeune' indicates Jean Louis Jacques Baradelle.
A four page 'Catalogue des instrumens de mathématiques qu’on trouve chez le sieur Baradelle...', Paris 1778 could have been produced by any of the four Baradelles of suitable dates (1). Similiarly, a reinvention of the self-setting equinoctial dial in 1779 could have been by either Nicolas Alexandre or Nicolas Eloy Baradelle if it was not a joint development (2).
