A laboratory assistant in the physics laboratory of the Paris Faculty of Sciences from 1849 when he replaced Silbermann, he later became Chef des travaux pratiques at the Ecole Supérieure de Pharmacie During the siege of Paris in 1870 he organised an electric lighting system and devised an ingenious electrical method for communicating with areas behind the enemy lines. Afterwards he set up as a maker of physics apparatus 'but he had too great a taste for experiment and the wish to be useful to others to derive any serious profit from it' (1).He made improvements. to Ampère's table, and the Atwood machine, developed the prototype of Curie's Quartz piezo-électrique instrument in the mid-1880, and devised a highly sensitive vertical galvanometer that carries his name. A Branly electrometer by him is in Teyler's Museum, Haarlem (2)p. Towards the end of his life he was working on an economic method for the making of aluminium.
