Biographie
After studying at the Ecole Polytechnique Conrad Schlumberger worked as a mining engineer before serving as an artillery officer during the Great War. In 1919, with his brother Marcel, he founded the 'Société de Prospection électrique with the financial backing of their father Paul an industrialist in Alsace. The purpose of the company was to determine the structure of geological layers by measuring their electrical resistance. In 1927 major success was achieved in the seearch for oil which led to the company concentrating solely in this field of activity.

From the beginning the company had been a constructor of instruments. Numerous devices for the study of emitted electrical waves and the recording iof echoes were developed, in particular, in 1947, a 'galvanomètre immergé' which was especially robust and effective. Like other major companies (Thomson, CGE, Alcatel,SFIM, SAGEM) in the 1960s Schlumber set up its own instrument-making division. In 1960 ACB - Ateliers de Construction Beaudouin - was purchased and in 1970 the Compagnie de Compteurs, Montrouge was added to what now became the company 'Compteurs Schlumberger'. In 1977 this was divided into 'Schlumberger Industries' and ENERTEC for the electrical part. The following year SEFRAM was added to the measurement section before being fused with ENERTEC to form a 'General instrumentation' branch producing oscilloscopes, frequency meters, generators and automatic recorders. This complex would be broken up in the 1990s1.
