Biographie
An optics and precision mechanics company founded in 1882 in Berlin. It produced stereo-binoculars and telescopes, photographic objectives of the type 'Protar' and 'Planar' which, like their microscopes, were made in collaboration with Zeiss. A label on a late 19th century microscope suggests a collaboration with Bausch Lomb (Rochester, New York). (1) By at least 1900, Krauss had moved to Paris where for a period he acted as an agent for Zeiss. For Yvon, this production was the spear-head of the invasion of German-made, geometrically conceived optical instruments.(2) Some or all of the other Krauss businesses may have been part of this company. According to a 1911 advertisement (3). the company also produced chemical and bacteriological analysis sets, microtomes, cameras and photographic lenses. It also had branches in Saint Petersburg and Tokio. In 1907 (4) the company was purchased by Barbier, Bénard & Turenne to become BBT Kraus (qv).
