Biographie
A firm of general mechanicians, E. Château having been 'Ingénieur des Arts-et-Manufactures while his son was trained at the Ecole Polytechnique. In c.1885 they succeeded the clockmakers Wagner and Collin (qv). Like their predecessors they also made metronomes, meters for electricity and other uses, lightning conductors, tide machines, tachymeters and other precision instruments to order. Their 1887 Catalogue contains astronomical regulators, sun-dials including a noon-gun and a Flechet-type 'chronomètre solaire', seconds counters, mercury-baths for astronomical observatories, current meters and fluviographs, self-registering rainfall metres, the stréphographe of L. J. Grfuey, machine speed. counters, depth and direction indicators, metronomes and lightning conductors. In 1897Aloÿs Verschaffel was in correspondence with them concerning the supply of paper rolls for his newly developed chronograph (1). In 1894 they restored the 16th century astronomical clock of Lyon cathedral as they had the 'Gros horloge' at Rouen two years earlier.
