Biographie

A pupil of Gambey (qv) Lorieux was probably the partner of Schwartz dit Lenoir (qv) whom he succeeded. Official supplier to the Dépôt des Cartes et Plans de la Marine numerous instruments by him have survived many of them marked 'Marine A[gence] G[énérale]'. Apart from standard instruments such as sextants and repeating circles, he also supplied the Marine with theodolites, a standard metre and a large number of micrometers (1). These were perhaps for use with Lugeol's split-objective micrometric telescope which acted as a telemeter (2). Among other instruments known by him are dip needles, octants, and marine telescopes. In the 1867 exhibition, Paris, he was awarded a silver medal for a sextant and a reflecting circle. He was succeeded by Hurlimann (qv).
