Biographie
Map and globe retailer and publisher, although the Parfait Indicateur also lists him among opticians, and makers of astronomical and mathematical instruments so he may also have dealt in these, as well as acting as a bookseller-publisher. In 1815 he published a 27cm terrestrial globe designed by Pierre Lapie and dedicated to the Duchess of Angoulême (1). He showed a pair of terrestrial and celestial globes at the 1819 exhibition for which he received an honorable mention. These were probably the 14 and 18inch globes designed by Pierre Lapie which Langlois had commissioned and published in 1820. In so doing he was consciously renewing a tradition in France which had produced no new globes for over half a century. His aim was to rival the globe-producers of other countries such as Cary in England, Ackermann in Upsala, and Behringer and Sotzmann in Frankfurt (2). In 1823 he published a 10in (25cm) celestial globe calculated by the geographer A.R. Fremin (3).
