Biographie
A balance-maker who, at the 1819 Industrial exhibition, exhibited 'des mesures linéaires sur ruban, qui sont recouvertes d'un vernis souple, bien cuit et très peu hygrométrique' (1). Further details concerning these are provided by Perrot who ascribes their invention to Champion. From his description it is clear that the measures in question are the spring re-bobined, printed linen tapes typically used by surveyors and carpenters from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century. Besides a range of other measuring devices Champion also provided drawing sheets for surveyors and various kinds of impermeable paper, tissues and cords.
