Biographie
An optician and geologist, he detected that certains jasper stones in the Saone basin had become tender and that when washed and pounded presented all the characteristics of Tripoli of Corfu (rottenstone) used in the polishing of glass. For this observation he received an 'honourable mention' in the jury report on the 1823 exhibition and a bronze medal for his achromatic glasses executed, 'by a scientific amateur' in the country 'far from all the resources of the capital', which by their size and qualities 'would do honour to a professional craftsman'.1 Subsequently he produced achromatic objective lenses of ellipsoidal form to completely destroy spherical aberration. At the same time he was investigating stone suitable for lithography of which he showed two at the 1827 exhibition.2
