Biographie
A specialist maker, perhaps the first, of acoustics apparatus, for a period Marloye worked in association with Felix Savart (d. 1844) until a disagreement about the lowest audible frequency brought an end to their collaboration. In 1849 he was awarded the Legion d'Honneur and he supplied a considerable amounts of apparatus to the Istituto Salvemini in Florence. In June 1853 his shop was visited by Ira and Charles Young, purchasing apparatus for Dartmouth College. The latter described him as 'a very pleasant old gentleman about 60, a member of the institute, & a red ribbon wearer, and although he can speak no English, written or spoken, he very kindly showed us many very interesting experiments upon sound with his different apparatus' (1).
Notes biographiques
1 Vapereau (1880) 1236; Brenni (Salvemini). Pantalony 25-6. To which institute Young refers is unclear since Marloye was not a member of the Institut de France; A ‘red ribbon wearer’ is a reference to the Legion d’Honneur, members of which wore a red ribbon.
