Biographie
was a mécanicien who in collaboration with Hamman patented a new form of ellipsograph or geared curve tracer in 1842.1 In November 1857 he was visited by Antoine d'Abbadie. According to d'Abbadie Hempel had no catalogue of instruments of his own but used that of Lerebours. He was a chamber-master without speciality.2 In 1866 he supplied an air pump to Teyler's Museum, Haarlem.3 He exhibited in the exhibitions of 1855, 1867 and 1878 showing mainly balances and pneumatic machines. In 1871 he had formed his own company 'Hempel & Cie', later 'O. Hempel & T.Hüe', Hüe later succeeding him, and among other instruments and physics aparatus made machines and accessories for the teaching of static electricity. A telescope carrying his signature is also known.4
