Biographie

Soleil was trained in the workshops of Hareing (qv) and Palmer. At the 1819 exhibition he was awarded silver medal for a selection of optical instruments (1). From 1823 to 1827 he worked closely with Fresnel in the making of his annular lenses and the mechanisms to rotate them. This led him into a broader specialism in optical apparatus and to contact with the circle of scientists around Fresnel investigating light in the perspective of the wave theory. Among Soleil's own inventions was the diffraction bench for demonstrating interference and diffraction phenomena by sunlight or lamplight, an apparatus for measuring the interaxial angle in biaxial crystals, an improved version of Biot's saccharimeter, and an improved version of Wheatstone's polar clock (2). In 1849 he retired having two successors, his son, Henri, and his son-in-law and apprentice Jules Duboscq who had married one of his daughters in 1834 It was with Duboscq that Soleil inv estigated daguerrotypes and some stereo daguerreotypes made by them together have survived. In January 1850 Théodore Olivier reported to the Société d'Encouragement on a new dividing-engine developed by Soleil which sub-divided the millimetre into 500 parts. The machine was used in the production of his saccharimeter (3). In November 1850 he was appointed a chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur (4).
