A civil engineer, in the early 1840s Dupin began to produce and sell folded paper geometric models of his own conception. These were intended to assist in the apprehension and study of all aspects of three-dimensional geometry (perspective, stone cutting, mineralogical measurement, architecture). the models can be disassembled so as to be remounted in different configurations thus giving direct experience of different geometric forms and their assembly. 'the main epistemological importance of these folded models is the integration of the material with the written text: the properties of each folded polyhedron are written on the folded cardboard itself' (1).
Dupin's geometric sets were manufactured and sold by Molteni & Cie (qv), and by Hachette who listed them in their e xtensive catalogue of scientific apparatus.
