Biographie

was born in Montpellier and studied in Toulouse. In 1835 he entered the Paris workshops of Gambey (qv) before setting up his own business in 1840. Inventive and imaginative, it is likely that it was from him that Biot ordered the construction of his instrument for measuring the the rotative power of liquids, one being made for the Ecole Polytechnique, another in 1847/8 for the Collège de France (1). Bianchi made many innovations and discoveries in physics apparatus, notably a rotary vacuum pump which was shown in the 1855 Universal Exhibition. His apparatus for determining the density of gun-powder was adapted in the powder works of France, Belgium and Sweden and brought him membership of the Order of Vasa in the latter country. In collaboration with Dumas he developed an apparatus for the liquification of protoxides of azote and with Morin he realised the latter’s totalising anemometer (2). An apparatus for the study of rotary polarisation was also of importance. Recipient of numerous awards in the national and international exhibitions, Bianchi was an officier of the Légion d’Honneur. Bianchi’s business was amalgamated with that of Collot ( qv ) in 1896.
