Biographie
Founded by the pharmacist Etienne Poulenc in association with his father-in-law, Pierre Wittmann, the business originally traded only in chemical products. In 1887 a department dealing in laboratory products and apparatus was added branching out into glassware and other apparatus from 1895 onwards. Prizes were obtained at various international exhibitions at the end of the 19th century. To develope this section in 1900 the firm purchased the precision instrument-making firm of Salleron-Demichel qv ). By this date the company had a capital of 4 million francs, factories at Ivry-Port, Montreuil-sous-Bois and Thiais, and a warehouse in the docks of St-Ouen. During this period the company handled the products of several other companies and in their 1905 catalogue apparatus by Lequeux, Wiesnegg, Pellin, Collot (Balances), Yvon, the Féry pryrometer by Pellin and Beaudouin is to be found. In 1919 the Golaz firm, specialised in high precision mechanics, was acquired, followed by Delaunay fils ainé, makers of areometers and densimeters, and of the thermometer maker Roberteau. The capital in 1920 was 40 million francs and factories in Loriol and Livron (Drôme) and at Le Pouzin in the Ardèche had been opened.
In 1928 the 'Etablissements Poulenc frères amalgamated with the Société des Usines du Rhone, to become the Société des Usines Chimiques Rhone-Poulenc, SA with a capital of 75 million francs. Already in 1929 the trade name 'Labo' was applied to the production of glass laboratory equipment1 and in 1932 the instrument section was renamed 'Prolabo'.1
