Biographie
An optical company which specialised in binoculars established when Baille joined or succeeded to Lemaire (qv ). Baille, who held a science doctorate from the Ecole Polytechnique, introduced stringent quality controls, and the company invested in machine-tools to produce optical and metal components which were interchangeable. Baille was an associate of Alfred Cornu with whom he collaborated in determining the mean density of the earth. From 1895-98 and from 1902-03 he was president of the Syndicat Patronal des Constructeurs en Instruments d’Optique & de Précision. It was thus perhaps no accident that Cornu wrote the introduction to the 1901 catalogue produced by this body in reaction to the German collective catalogue prepared for the 1900 exhibition. In 1900 the company disposed of two steam-powered factories, one in Paris and one at Crosnes. In addition to binoculars they produced telescopes and optical apparatus for telegraphy (1). From 1862-1906 the proprietor was H.Portier. The company continued in business as Baille, Lemaire Valette until c. 1950.
