Biographie
Free of the Founders' Corporation 23 November 1685 as a 'Marchand Fondeur suivant la Cour'(1), Macquart had been trained by Pierre Sevin whose stock he eventually purchased( 2). In 1688 he made a quadrant for Jean Mathieu de Chazelles and in 1717 the Czar, Peter the Great, visited his shop and purchased two equinoctial dials, a graphometer, a small quadrant and an artillery instrument for 272 livres (3). Several instruments signed 'Macquart à Paris' are known including a silver inclining dial with scales for Siam and Isfahan and a low latitude dial (14°) carrying an unidentified coat-of-arms (4), but whether they should be ascribed to Henry or to René (whose relationship, if any, is not known), is indeterminable. He was succeeded by his son-in-law, Michel Cadot at the same sign. Olivier de Rouvray, son,of the drawing master, Gilles de Rouvray, was living in Maquart's house in December 1700 (5).
