Founded in 1832 by Théodore Vion, the business specialised initially in marine and land compasses, later extending into the development of the instrument for aeronautical use. In the early twentieth century marine telescopes and mechanical logs were added to their range, as also were ship bulkhead clocks.
The company, of which the logo was a seated griffon, remained active until the early/mid-1960s. Thereafter it was successively acquired by BBT, Barbier, Bénard, Turenne
Satori (Clayes-Souilly, Seine & Marfne)
Altiude (Morteau, Doubs)
before being acquired by the Danish company Delite, makers of a range of instruments for yachts and pleasure boats.
The making of compasses however passed to Westmarine, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA (1)
