Biographie
-
Lordelle became free of the Founders' Corporation, 'par déliberation de la Communauté' on 29 July 1737 (1), but may have been making instruments earlier as an astronomical ring dial by him is said to have belonged to La Condamine in 1735 (2). He was married to Marguerite Magdeleine Joüenne, the sister of Claude Langlois' wife, and was thus a cousin to Canivet who toook over his sign, and the father of J. A. Lordelle. A number of mathematical instruments are known by him including a graphometer dated 1742. In 1746 he tested an aune made by Guibout (3). A gilt-brass compass, datable to 1745-47 from the crowned C punch mark that it carries, was later presented to the astronomer J. J. Lalande probably at the same time as the fleur-de-Lys indicating North was over-engraved with a Phrygian bonnet (4).

2 NMM, Greenwich D107 36_58c. Higton 191-2, no 175. Ownership by La Condamine depends upon an inscription in 19th century lettering gold blocked on the case of the instrument.
3 Graphometer, Nachet collection; aune CNAM. Other instruments are listed in Marcelin. For other verifications of standard aunes see Rocca & Launay 163.
4 Tesseract 103, N° 24. For the crowned C punch see the Introduction to this work.
