Biographie

signed, as engraver, gores of a terrestrial globe when he was just 14. The full inscription reads ‘Ioan[nes] Aquilius scul[psit] Parisiis anno 1651. aetat[is] suae 14 an[nis] auspiciis D.M. De la Ramée’ (engraved in Paris by Jean Aquilin [?], aged 14, under the aegis of D[ominus] M. de la Ramée). The globe gores in question were dedicated to Louis XIV and in the dedicatory inscription de la Ramée expands his name to Aegidius (Gilles) M. de la Ramée (qv), and describes himself as ‘Royal Lecturer for the globes and spheres’ ( Regis Lectore in Sphaera et Globis)1.
