Free of the Founder’s Company by patrimony on 8 August 1771 (1) Nicolas Eloi already held the title of Ingénieur du Roi in January 1773 when he married Suzanne Marie Hamot (2). During the. 1770s he produced several instruments to special order and in 1777 created a company with Alexandre Pierre Julienne Debellair for the making and commerce of instruments which however went bankrupt the following year when Nicolas Eloy was imprisoned. It was his father who bailed him out for the sum of 8 000 livres (3). He worked in the Rue Dauphiné whence he signed a spherical level with minute divisions (4). A universal equinoctial dial in the form of a watch by him is in the collections of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, as is a pair of 6.7cm globes by Jean Fortin dated 1770 mounted by Baradelle who signed the meridian ring (5).
In late 1781 Baradelle catalogued the mathematical instruments of the defunct Marquis of Courtanvaux and was one of the three distributors of the sale catalogue, Hulot (qv ) who had catalogued the machines and tools being one of the others. In 1784 Philippe Denis Pierres avowed to Benjamin Franklin that he had allowed Baradelle to see his small press which Baradelle thought he could make lighter (6). The following year he estimated the instruments of the tax receiver Bergeret and in 1789 was known because he ‘sets up lightning conductors and draws meridians on walls and floors, sun-dials for gardens &c’ (7). 18 November 1790, Baradelle wrote to Condorcet asking for his protection during the troubled revolutionary period and because of the loss of a good part of his employment (8). He seems however to have accommodated with the new regime as in 1791 he was named Commissaire des Corps et Communautés supprimées, and as such responsible for the transfer of their goods into the dépôt général. On 24 May 1791 order was given for his payment as such by the Commune. He received a salary of 125 livres per month for this and had an assistant. His ability to recognise different standards of weights and measures used by the different corporations was particularly appreciated (9).
A Member of the artistes associés du Cloître Notre Dame, he was Commissaire for the district d’Henri IV (? = Pont Neuf), on 27 February 1790 he signed a protest by the Commune of Paris against the creation of a special corps of Artillery (10). Re-elected as Commissaire 6 March 1790 (11), he became a member of the Assemblée électorale of 1792 for the district of the Pont Neuf. Commissaire de la Section, 2 février 1793, he was elected one of the eight secretaries of the Assemblé at the 60th séance (12). Warden of weights and measure and also director of a cannon foundry, Baradelle was denounced 4 November 1793 as a 'sans-culticide' and a partisan of Chaumettes et Hébert (13).
Working with is cannon foundry apparently led Baradele to pay closer attention t. iron casting. In September 1818, he was awarded a prize by the Société d'Encouragement for his malleable iron casting method and to exploit this he set up a company with his son Alexandre. THis. however was closed after his death the following year although a patent related to the process had been awarded on 7 April 1829 (14).
