Notes biographiques
-
1 Lavagne 48 & 55 states that the mark ‘Au Q couronné’ was purchased by Barbin from Nicolas Canu at the same time. Elsewhere however (p. 57) he affirms that ‘Maître Chemin (1680 ?) was the founder of the mark before noting (same page) that Nicolas Chemin received this mark from the Cour des Monnaies in 1768. This latter may be confirmation to Chemin as sole user of the mark aftfer the decease or retirement of Barbin from their partnership. The origin of the mark however remains in doubt.
2 CNAM inv 4235-2 described and illustrated in Pommier no 53. Several other weights marked with the crowned Q are ascribed on this basis to Barbin & Chemin in the same volume.
