Biographie
-
An early member of a balance-making dynasty in Limoges, Jean Baptiste Bardonneau (or Bardonnaud) was appointed controller of weights for the city 5 July 1668 (1). In 1680 a report on his newly devised balance without weights states that he had 'acquired a great reputation in his trade of balance-maker' (2). The instrument was a money balance the fulcrum of which was moved against the scale, the pans remaining fixed with the empty pan providing the counter-weight.
