Biographie
-
An optician who founded his business in 1838 succeeding his father-in-law Bourot. His wide range of production included tubes for thermometers and baromleters. He was succeeded by his son A. Berthiot. Subsequently a partnership, Benoist & Berthiot, was formed between L. Berthiot, grandson of the founder and his great-uncle F. Benoit. The company developed the industrial manufacture of eye-glass lenses. L. Benoit senior invented an hydraulic machine for cutting lenses c. 1842 which was installed in his factory at Sezane (51), and this was complemented from 1864 onwards by machines for producing cylindrical lenses, and from 1888 by machines capable of making toric lenses (1).
