Biographie

The business dealing in all that related to painting and drawing was established in 1833 (1). A family business it was directed successively by:
Jules Berville
Léon Berville (1837- ?) from c. 1869-1895
Paul Berville 1896 -1937
In later years they became particularly associated with the camera obscura. These were retailed in England by Lechertier Barbe who had premises in Jermyn Street until the mid-1970s (2). Among other products retailed by the Berville company was the Addomètre [Addometer] for which they were the general European agents (3).

1. For this aspect of the business see Lugt sv Maon Berville.
2. Hammond & Austin 52-3 who state that an instruction leaflet by Lachetier Barbe in English is virtually identical with Berville's mode d'emploi.
