The brother of Charles I Bloud (qv), a batchelor who, was like Charles a Protestant and pursued as 'Mal-converti' after 1689. He is described then as a 'chamber-master', i.e. a maker to the trade without a retail outlet of his own (1). An episode is recorded of him that a dragoon billeted on him, had not been able to bring him to sign [a subscription to the articles of Catholicism] even though he has consumed all his furnishings and had severely maltreated him. 'The said Bloud having escaped from his clutches and wandering the streets, the soldiers came upon him and, by order of his lodging steward, dragged him away while striking him to the house of Lemonnier, so as to tie them up together; but impressed by their firmness, he let Bloud go and threw the cord on the fire' (2). In this text Bloud is described as a ‘vieux garçon’ (old batchelor) so he may have been fairly advanced in years. He published a description of the magnetic azimuth dial, and two dials signed by him are known (3).
