Biographie
An optician and maker of physics aparatus Hæring (Häring) may have been a native of Dunkerk or have worked there for a period.1 His demonstration instruments for the physical sciences were specifically modelled upon those of Nollet and Sigaud de la Fond. At the 1806 Exhibition he received an 'honourable mention' for 'telescopes of the same size as those of Dollond, found very good' and for a well-executed air pump.2 At the 1819 exhibition he received an honourable mention for 'a very good achromatic telescope'. On a gregorian telescope (pc) and on a combined barometer and thermometer he described himself as 'Opticien du Roi de Wurtembourg'.3 Hæring seems to have had a collection of curiosities for Janvier notes seeing a planetary clock by Castel in his shop and adds that 'this artist rarely misses acquiring in the trade curious objects of all kinds'.4

Notes biographiques
1 A graphometer signed by him at Dunkirk is in a private collection.
2 Rapport…, 155. For a large graphometer with telescopic sights supplied to the Génie Militaire and used at Dunkerk, see Randier 24.7. 88 lot.
3 The kingdon of Wurtemburh was created by Napoleon in 1806 when its ruler, Duke Frederick II, became King Frederick I. He was succeeded by William in 1816. Since the telescope on which this inscription occurs carries the Palais Royal address it probably dates from aftfer 1815, and at least from after 1807 when the Tribunat left the Palais Royal.
