Biographie
-
A maker specialised in instruments for use in physics, Cappy was particularly noted for his thermometers and barometers, being described as 'l'homme le plus intelligent pour la construction des baromètres, thermomètres etc...'1. His thermometers were graduated according to Reaumur's principles2. 'Ingénieur de physique de l'Académie des Sciences3, he supplied instruments to Lavoisier from 1767. In 1772, being harassed by the corporation of Faïenciers, who claimed to control barometer and thermometer making, he petitioned the Académie des Sciences, with Bourbon and Perricat (qqv), for protection. He was succeeded by his nephew Felix-Jacques-Antoine Mossy (qv) whom he had taken into partnership during his own lifetime4.
