Biographie
Born in Paris, the son of Joseph Antoine Chiquet, a maître teinturier, and Jeanne Louise Beurre, Chiquett was baptised on 22 June 1722 and worked for ten years with the optician George (qv). On 13 June 1789 he was elected to the Corporation of instrument-makers with a brevet as 'Ingénieur du Roi'. Chiquet specialised in the making of microscopes claiming, when he postulated for a national recompence in 1791, that his instruments were as good as, even better than, those produced by the leading English makers. This claim was largely substantiated by the testimonials produced for him on this occasion, Putois (qv) for whom Chiquet worked for example stating that 'Chiquet m'a fait divers microscopes superieur a tous ceux que j'aye vu; qu'il m'a refait des lentilles pour des microscopes de Dollond qui ont produit de plus grands effets qu'avant'. Further on Putois noted that Chiquet made all of a microscope himself 'd'un bout a l'autre' and that he also made achromatic telescopes. In 1747 Chiquet made for Adanson the microscope which he used in Senegal continuing to supply him with lenses following his return in 1754. Other satisfied customers were Metzal, Professor of Anatomy at the Musæum and the physician Charles. Chiquet was awarded a recompence of 3000 livres, the maximum available in the second class with a 2000 livres prime in view of his age. Unfortunately he died during the deliberations over his dossier, the award being paid to his inheritors. In his application Chiquet described himself 'Height four feet 8 inches, hair and eyelashes chestnut, forehead high, nose short, eyes grey, mouth (illegible), chin round, visage long'.1
