Biographie
-
Delagrave was a noted educational publisher whose output included globes and mineral specimens. He succeeded by purchase to the educational publishing business established by the historian and lexicographer Charles Dézobry (1798-1871). Delagrave developed the scientific side of the business in particular geography and cartography in collaboration with Emile Levasseur (1828-1911), social scientist, historian and reformer of geography teaching in France (1). He published the instruction manuel for topographical instruments devised by General Peigne, professor of topography at the Ecole Militaire de St Cyr, and published, if he did not also organise, the manufacture of, the instruments (2). Publisher to the Société de Géographie among his output was a range of terrestrial and celestial globes, and geographical clocks carrying his name are also known (3). In collaboration with Naud-Evrard he published the 15 inch terrestrial globe designed by Charles Larochette (Dessinateur au Dépôt de la Guerre) and L. Bonnefant (professeur au Lycée Fontanès, Paris). A 10.5in (26cm) terrestrial globe of his publication was prepared by Charles Perigot and drawn by Alphonse Mouraix (4).
Globe sizes 26cm: 37.5cm; 46cm (5).
