Biographie
-
The elder son of the historian and cartographer Claude Delisl, he early became interested in map-making. In his study of this he was helped by G.D. Cassini and thus had easy access to the new geographical data being accumulated by the exploratory expeditions sent out by the Académie des Sciences, and to the new astronomical date being accumulated at the Observatoire de Paris. Delisle set up a cartographic business and quickly established new standards of precision and clarity. 15 March 1702 he became a member of the Académie des Sciences and in 1718 he was appointed 'première Géographe du Roi' in recompence for his tutoring of the young Louis XV in geography. Several globes of his production have survived, some of them engraved by Berey (qv ), others by Charles Simmoneau.
