Biographie
Pouilly was working from at least 1650. That he was the father or uncle of the J. Poüilly active in the 1680's and later is possible although not necessarily the case. A lodestone dated 1680, and a sector dated 1681 are known. J. Poüilly is mentioned in the Journal des Scavans 12 May 1682 for his new method of arming lodestones which enabled them to lift up to 200 times their own weight. The following year on 19 April a geometrical rod of his invention was mentioned in the same journal, which in 1684 reported on a multiple drawing and topographical instrument by him. Yet another new instrument by him was described on 19 March 1685. In 1692 he is listed in the Livre commode... where his method of arming lodestones and his microscope are singled out for mention. the issue of this directory for the previous year had added that he sold a c'neat and. curious' calendar for the study (1).

1. Fournier i 241. Turner 44-45 who lists five instruments by Poüilly. A sector by him dated 1681 was presented at Sotheby's in October 1994 (cf. Teseract 91 N° 34); a recipiangle NMM , Greenwhich (SIR4/36-533c) is dated 1686, and an undated simple microscope of Huygens type is in the Science Museum, London. Two graphometers by him are known and there is a plotting instrument in the State Library of New South Wales, Sydney Australia dated 1684. Another microscope is in the Billings Collection.
