Biographie
-
A notary, Mantois c. 1886, entered into partnership with Charles Feil whose researches into the production of barytite glass had led him into financial difficulties. On Feil’s death in 1887 Feil (Mantois??) became sole proprietor of his business and, with the collaboration of the chemist Verneuil, successfully continued research into barytite glass. In particular he concentrated on glass for photographic lenses, and supplied the basic material for most of the objectives used in the instruments created for the ‘Carte du ciel’ programme. A high proportion of the world’s largest objectives in 1900 were produced from Mantois’ glass.1 He was succeeded by his brother-in-law Numa Parra (qv ).
