Biographie
Working from at least 1634,in 1638 when he effected the probate inventory of the effects of Sarah Pitten, wife of Melchior Tavernier (qv), Blondeau was described as 'fabricateur des instruments de mathématique'. ‘Confirmation’ of a lodging in the Louvre, granted on 3 Fév 1642 to Pierre et Baptiste Blondeau ‘ingénieurs des Forces mouvantes et travaillant aux instruments de mathématiques, établis à la conduite et fabrication des inventions et machines qui servent à tirer les ponts des strucateurs dans la grande galerie du Louvre’, was issued on 14 May 1645 (1). He seems however to have had premises in or near the Louvre well before then as ‘Galleries du Louvre’ is given as his address when he signed as witness to a marriage contract on 22 August 1634 (2) and Ile du Palais when he witnessed that of his wife’s (Marie Cossart) uncle, Louis de Bourbon (3). A surveyor’s circle (4) and two large graphometers by him are known (5). It was probably to the latter instrument that Pierre Desnoyers referred when he asked Mersenne in 1648 to have Roberval reserve for him with ‘Monsr Blondeau’ ‘un demy-cercle prest, un petit raporteur et un estuy de Mathematique avec le compas de proportion’, although to which Blondeau he referred must remain uncertain (6). Earlier, in 1645, Roberval had taken meridian altitude measurements of the Sun from the Galeries du Louvre using a quadrant divided to minutes of arc by Blondeau (7).
