Biographie
An engraver and mathematics teacher from before 1620 in which year he signed a report on behalf of the city of Aix concerning the goodness of the water dispensed by a fountain belonging to the Augustinian friars. In 1624 he was commissioned by the city to engrave views of the triumphal arches erected for the formal entry of Louis XIII1 and he included in the published volume the new map of Aix that he had drawn and engraved the previous year. Various other official employments of him are recorded in the city archives up to 1638. In 1633, with the surveyor-painters Augier et François Flour, he worked on a geometric survey of Provence under the direction of the intendant Séguiran, replacing Gassendi who had refused to undertake the task. This survey gave rise to a remarkable map of the coasts of Provence and some other maps of the province produced in collaboration with his son-in-law, the engraver Louis Cundier (d. mars 1681) who had married Maretz' only child, Madeleine, in 1637. Two graphometer-type surveying instruments by Maretz are known.2
