Michel was granted letters patent in 1764 exempting him from the jurisdiction of the Founders' Company.1 For Cassini in 1792/3 he made a declination theodolite with suspended compass which Lalande stated could read to 2 or 3 minutes.2 In April 1794 he was named to the Commission temporaire des Arts to assess collections of scientific apparatus in what related to mechanics.3 According to Lesparat he had been the widow Lennel's leading workman.4 In 1801 when Jecker set up his workshop of some 40 craftsmen Michel joined him. He was then described by Lalande as one of the most able craftsmen in Paris.5
