Piano-manufacturers who made and marketed the 'chromamètre' invented by Roller c. 1827 to faciltate the tuning of pianos. It consisted of a lute-shaped monochord with an extended neck inlaid with a brass plaque slotted along one edge. A bridge may be clamped into one of the slots to establish the note required in the chromatic scale marked alongside the slots. A key mounted at the bottom of the instrument controls a hammer within the body. When the key is depressed, the hammer strikes the string through a small hole in the belly. Examples of the instrument are sometimes found among the apparatus of physics laboratories for use in acoustic research and demonstrations (1). In 1827 the firm adopted a policy of employing only French workmen of whom there were 54 in 1837 making primarily upright pianos. They collaborated with the architect Laborde in the development of a system to maintain pianos in tune (2).
