Biographie
Miroitier and optician, George (or Georges) was a highly regarded 'Lunetier du Roi pour les lunettes & points d'optique' (1), and was entitled to describe himself as 'George Opticien de l'Académie Royale des Sciences et de la Marine' (2). For Clairault he constructed achromatic object glasses with two or three lenses (3), and Darquier purchased a seven and a half foot telescope from him as part of his initial astronomical equipment in c. 1745/6 (4). Subsequently, probably in 1761, George supplied Darquier with a small refracting telescope for his quadrant. An indication of his seriousness as an optician is given by the fact that on 30 November 1770, J.H. de Magellan obtained and sent to him 60 lbs of flint glass at a cost of 165 livres 13 sous (5). Sun-dials signed by him are also known (6). He died at what was presumably his domicile in the Rue Guénégand and was buried on the 20 October 1774 (7). A box microscope is known signed 'George le fils rue Dauphine à Paris', but identity or filiation have yet to be established (8). A 1.25 in silver pointed shagreen pocket telescope is known (9).
