Chapotot as an undefined name is more frequently encountered on instruments than that of either Jean , Charles, or François who are discussed below. Charles and Jean were brothers but which of them is concerned on instruments signed simply 'Chapotot à Paris' is difficult to determine. The work of Jean's son François however may be identified as he employed a curving capital 'C' followed by a straight 'h' in his signature (1).
