Perhaps a scion of the old Dieppe familiy of Crucifix linked by Milet with the production of Christ figures in ivory. He was active from 1646. He was described as 'burgher of this city of Dieppe' in the baptismal act of his daughter Marie 15 July 1655, (1) and as founder and turner in brass in 1662. (2( His wife was Claude Guerrier. Two ivory diptych dials by him are known and an ivory globe containing an horizontal dial and a lunar calendar punch signed 'N C' may be attributed to him.3

Vsage de l'orloge ou cadran azimvttal. Ensemble de l'equinoctial ou Cadran Vniversel, Dieppe, 1653. (1).
1. A single copy of this pamphlet is known which is now in the Adler PLanetarium, History of Astronomy Collection, Chicago. The pamphlet which is signed only by the initials 'N C' has a text which is identical with that attributed to Charles Bloud (qv) although typographically the work is distinct. It may therefore be the case that a text common to the makers of magnetic azimuth dials in Dieppe, was issued by them individually. The pamphlet is reproduced and translated by William Newman and Anthony Turner in Lloyd 20-22. For a contemporary English translation of this collective work see under Charles Bloud.
