Biographie
A cutler who made high quality knives, scalpels and lancets for medical use on which he used a pearl as his mark. A special design of scissors is attributed to him (1). Married with Angélique Vigneron, Didier Diderot was the father of the man of letters, part compiler of the Encyclopédie, Denis Diderot. Property-owning and relatively well-off, Didier Diderot was nonetheless a somewhat authoritarian father although according to his will he had subsidised his wayward son with some 10,000 livres over a period of twenty years. Pious and conformist, pen portraits of him are to found in two works by his son 'L'Entretien d'un père avec ses enfants, ou du danger de se mettre au-dessus des lois' (1772) and as the protagonist of Le Père de famille (2).
