Known only by a luxuriou, diptych form compendium in pallisander, silver, steel, brass and mica inscribed 'Horarium Generale a Solle Lvna et stellis at Solvebat Hilarius 1556' (1). The inscription may be translated as either 'The general timepiece rose with greater ease to the Sun, Moon and stars, 1556' or 'Hilary rose with the general time piece to the Sun, Moon and stars, 1556'. In the latter case Hilary is likely to have been the designer of the dial which was clearly the work of a professional tabletier more elaborate than, but not dissimilar from, other known dials of this type (2).
