Biographie
Hobit was astronomer to Philip the Good of Burgundy from 1440 to 1444 during which time he made ‘Ung Mapemonde ronde, en guise de pome, en une custode de cuir noir’ as it was described in the inventory of Philip’s possessions taken after his death in 1467. This terrestrial globe, which, since it was described as having the form of an apple, was probably fairly small, was accompanied by a written description in French. In an inventory of 1536 the black leather case of the instrument is described as being bound with silver and split.1
