was set up as a partnership between Félix Richard's widow Antoinette Froment and her sons Jules and Max-Félix on the death of Félix Richard who left his business in parlous state. After negotiating an agreement with the creditors, the new régime set about reconstructio Àn. In 1878 they exhibited at the Universal Exhibition, and in 1880 Jules patented a series of impovements to the barometer and registering instruments which were to become the staple of the new company. The company was formally incorporated in 1882 with the initials 'RF' becoming the typical mark of the company. The success of the company's recording instrument was rapid and the range of their instruments grew during the following decades as new needs were identidfied. In c. 1886 they constructed the remarkable 'Brontometer' for the English meteorologist George Symons. The instrument recorded phenomena related to thunderstorms. In 1887, Richard instruments were officially adopted by the French Navy and, on the occasion of the 1889 exhibition, it was Richard's instruments that wer installed at the top of the Eiffel Tower to relay meteorological information to the ground-level exhibition by an electric link. In 1891 the partnership between Max and Jules Richard was dissolved although the 'RF' mark continued.
