was born in Switzerland and was a friend of Ferdinand Berthoud. 'Machiniste et horloger privilégié du Roi suivant la cour', in 1749 he showed an experimental clock movement with heavy pendulum beating small arcs to the Académie des Sciences which accorded its approbation and for which on 21 July he received royal letters patent on 24 May 1750. This grant was immediately attacked by the Corporation d'horlogers de Paris and a pamphlet war broke out before the grant was annulled Two other experimental movements developed shortly afterwards are conserved with the 1749 movement in the Musée des Arts & Métiers. Intended as steps towards a longitude time-keeper, one of them was tried at sea by de Langle. In 1753 Mme de Pompadour ordered a pantograph of the type developed by Claude Langlois (qv.) from Rivaz who sub-contracted the order to Damien Cœur 'Marchand fourbisseur du Roi suivant le Grand Conseil'.1
