Biographie
Already well-established in 1626 when he was described as 'Ingénieur ordinaire du Roi ès mathématiques', Vernier baptised his son Bathélémy 3 August 1627, and a second, Jacques, 22 May 1628 (1). Described as 'ingénieur aux instrumens de mathématiques du Roi' in 1635, he sold his workshop in the Louvre to a goldsmith on 26 June 1636 (2). Vernier may have had a family relationship with the cutler Pierre Vernier who had a workshop in the Louvre from 1608 and had baptised a daughter Anna the previous year. A recipiangle invented by Dulac (1607) is known by him (3), as are two graphometers, one dated 1607, the other 1630 (4)
