Biographie
Vignon worked for a long period with Chapotot the younger and was responsible for the greater part of the portable quadrant ordered from the former by the Académie des Sciences for de Lisle. The quality of his work impressed several of the academicians chiefly concerned with precision measurement in astronomy, the Chevalier de Louville going so far as to cancel an order that he had given Bion in c. 1721 for a micrometer in order to have it made by Vignon. For a 3ft quadrant with telescopes and micrometer he asked 1500 or 1600 livres (1). In mid-November he left Paris with Guillaume de L'Isle for St Petersburg where he became an assistant astronomer at the observatory as well as practising his trade. He married in St Petersburg 12 November 1734 only to die two weeks later (2).
