Couldray held an appointment as 'Royal clockmaker' and appears in the accounts from 1504-1529. In 1504 he was paid for the purchase of ‘cuivre à abiller la spère’ de Louis XII, and for the rent of a house, as for an assistant, ‘varletz’, to work on the sphere during September. That the large astrolabe seen by Cardinal Louis d'ragon n the libary at Blois was his work remains to be. proved,although that he built a clock with an astrolabe dial for the church of Saint Gatien at Tours, well documented (1).
